(This happens some time before the tournament, but at no particular moment)
Lars and Paul had been in the Hokkaido forest for days, looking for Kuma. They had found many caves with many different bears but no Kuma. Yet once they arrived in front of yet another cave late in the evening, Paul was suddenly certain Kuma was around. So he shouted:
“Hey Kuma! I know you’re around, it stinks more than anywhere else! So show yourself!”
Some moment later, a bear emerged from the cave and growled:
(I know it stinks, I can’t sleep with your stinky hairpray’s scent all over the place!)
“He doesn’t have any t-shirt or scarf… Is that Kuma?” asked Lars who still wasn’t certain but Paul reassured him.
“Yeah, it’s him. That’s Kuma…”
Yet despite first looking at Kuma with a defiant air, now Paul couldn’t say anything else and looked at the bear with a sorry look. He tried to hide his expression but he knew what they were here to tell him… That his beloved Heihachi had died… Jin had only took Kuma and thrown him in the forest without any explanation when he took control of the Zaibatsu back so Kuma didn’t know about his master’s passing…
“So you’re Kuma?” asked Lars while the bear looked at him with attention. That man had a familiar smell… Family smell… and hair… After looking at the newcomers, Kuma answered:
(Yes, I am. Like your friend said.)
Assuming the bear answered by the positive, mostly with the nod he made, Lars continued to speak:
“Okay. Then we came to tell you something…”
Not knowing how to put it, being embarrassed by the news to tell, Lars bluntly said:
“Heihachi Mishima is dead. He died sometimes ago.”
Kuma first didn’t believe the news but why would those people come to tell him that? He then looked toward Paul and seeing his sorrowful face made him understand that it was true. Paul would not act like this toward him if there was no reason to feel sad for him… So it was true, his beloved master was dead… He then asked in a growl that looked a little too plaintively for his taste:
(How? How did he die?)
Not understanding what Kuma just asked but noticing his weak growl, Lars and Paul both didn’t answer and after some seconds, Lars only told him:
“I’m sorry. Sorry for the bad news.”
That is not what I asked, thought Kuma who was also used to people not understanding him so he sighed it away as Lars continued to speak:
“There is a tournament, held in his honor. We thought it would be good that you came to show your affection to him. If you come with us, we will take you to Violet Systems where you will be hosted and will be able to train for the upcoming tournament.”
I’ll probably learn how he died there, thought Kuma who decided that he would participate to honor his beloved master. So while growling, Kuma sadly nodded. He’ll also probably learn who that guy smelling slightly like Heihachi and having some Mishima hairstyle was exactly… Yet now he felt really sad and letting go a little whimper, he retreated to his cave.
“Must we go after him? To pet him or something?” asked Lars who wondered how the bear was taking the news. He really seemed heartbroken…
“… No. Kuma probably needs some alone time... He’ll be back later. We’ll wait for him.” said Paul who still pitied his rival.
And after leaving him some time to cope with the news of his master’s death, some hours later, in the early morning, Lars and Paul saw the bear re-emerge from the cave with his suitcase, probably containing some of his clothes, his t-shirts and scarfs. After Kuma growled while somehow showing with a sign of his head that he was ready, they began to walk toward the helicopter to get Kuma to Violet Systems. While they were walking toward the helicopter, Lars told Kuma:
“I’m deeply sorry for your loss, Kuma, I really think you did a good thing to accept to come to that homage. As his illegitimate son, I will also participate…”
So you’re his son? I guess it makes sense with the smell, Heihachi didn’t only have that devil son it seems… thought Kuma who said nothing while Lars continued to speak.
“… but I will tell you the truth, I don’t really feel like going to that homage to your master. Yet I must since he was my father. But from what I know of him, it does not make me like him very much. I’m glad I could find you since I guess I should get the point of view of someone who really liked him… who never had any conflict with him… Like you. Why did you like him? Was he kind toward you? Was he kind toward anyone else? What would be the qualities you see in him that would make him a good person? I guess he had some, no person is completely evil or unlikable… I need to know them before I go to that tournament… to honor him… And you really seem to like him, so I guess you could tell me… I want to honor him frankly not just because I have to.”
Lars felt a little weird talking to a bear who wouldn’t even be able to answer him, yet maybe somehow Kuma could show some hints on why he liked Heihachi and somehow make him understand…
Kuma knew that Heihachi had his faults and he wasn’t really surprised that Lars would not like him very much. In fact, he was surprised that Lars would try to know more about Heihachi’s good sides… So he growled:
(I can’t really say you’re wrong to see his bad sides. He was indeed sometimes annoying… Taking me for granted, being a cheapskate toward me despite what I was doing for him… Cheapskate in the sense that he would go and take everything before me but he would then give me a lot anyway, I mean already considering me like a human is very special coming from a human. They tend to see all other species as below them. Heihachi would see me below him indeed, like he sees everybody else, but would see me above a lot of humans. He loved me and he loved my father Kuma I very much… He raised him since he was a cub like he raised me since I was born. He was kind toward us… I miss him… My second father… I will fight for him without any doubts and to honor him, and the training he gave me, during the tournament, I will beat that punk over there…)
Feeling the tone Kuma growled, Paul who was walking in front of the others, turned around and asked:
“You’re talking about me? What were you saying? I know you talked about me…”
(Yeah I did. I just said I would beat you during the tournament…)
“You’re getting insolent… I don’t understand a word but you do look like you’re looking for a fight…”
(I do. Just not now.)
“You wanna fight?”
(I said not now but if you insist…)
Kuma got on his two legs, preparing his fighting stance while Paul also prepared to fight. But Lars quickly interrupted:
“Hey! Paul, stop! You don’t even know what Kuma said, don’t pick a fight now…”
“He doesn’t want to wait, he’s provoking me.”
(You’re the one getting all crazy, one small beat up will put some sense into your strangely shaped head…)
“I think he’s insulting me…” continued Paul.
“No, no he’s not.”
(Yes, I am.)
Lars looked at Kuma and regretted that he didn’t understand a word the bear was saying. Was he really insulting Paul or not? Kuma was speaking, yes, that, Lars could tell since Kuma did begin that monologue after he asked him about Heihachi but still, Lars understood nothing from it.
“Look, hum, both of you, stop fighting now. You’ll get the occasion to do it once in that tournament.”
“Okay but I think he insulted me. He should apologize.”
(I’ll apologize if you beat me in the tournament; otherwise saying I would beat you like I just said will prove to have been right, so I won’t have to apologize.)
Crossing his arms, Paul said after Kuma finished growling:
“Okay, apologies accepted.”
(I didn’t… Whatever. But I should thank you since you came for me, so thank you.)
And the trio continued walking toward the helicopter. Finishing what he began to say, Kuma then told Lars:
(Heihachi was kind toward some people. Just ask Xiaoyu. I think he saw her like his granddaughter. He had affection for her. Go ask her. And bring me with you, so I can see Panda…)
“Ah, okay…” answered Lars who really wished he understood what the bear was saying… But raising a civilised bear like this already meant that Heihachi had some good qualities…
