While going back to the Zaibatsu, Lee wondered if things would have been different if he had tried to take care of Jin since the time he heard about him, when Jin arrived at his grandfather’s home at fifteen years old. From his comfortable mansion in the Bahamas, Lee had seen the article where it said that Heihachi was at some convention and had taken his grandson Jin Kazama with him.
Lee was unaware of Jin’s existence before reading that article, he knew Kazuya and Jun had some kind of small love story but he didn’t think it went that far between them, Kazuya never was close to anyone. He had always been the shy type, often hiding behind his fists and aloof attitude so as to think he went as far as to sleep with a woman was kind of surprising… Yet just the fact that he could love someone, which Lee didn’t doubt by the few he saw from Kazuya and Jun, gave Lee some faith in the exorcism Jun asked his help for. Without knowing what Kazuya was exactly, he already knew his adoptive brother was special… He had been witness to too many supernatural events when he was young, like lights flickering and things moving or falling down abruptly when Kazuya was in a bad, angry or sad mood and he had sometimes felt that evil aura around Kazuya, that weird and unworldly aura… He often feared his adoptive brother but he knew Kazuya was not the complete monster his father thought he was or that even Kazuya tried to make people believe he was. Now sadly he was but before that, Lee knew that Kazuya always kept a picture of his mother in his bedroom and then on his desk when he was head of the Zaibatsu, and by the way he suddenly looked respectful when looking at his grandfather’s portrait in the office, a respect he never showed anyone in any other circumstances, Lee knew that Kazuya also loved his mother and his grandfather. When Jun talked about a possession, Lee easily believed her, the good Kazuya was hidden behind that Devil. So Lee had thought at the time that Kazuya could be saved and that he could finally have that brother he wished he had since years. But the exorcism didn’t work (now knowing it was a gene may explain why it didn’t work) and Kazuya got killed by his father while Lee was exiled back to China and threatened by Heihachi to never come back or he would be killed as well. So traumatized by Kazuya’s death, fearing for his own life, wanting to forget it all, Lee had decided to flee even further than China and arrived in the Bahamas, where he had found a math teacher job there for a while before he started his own company, far from that crazy and evil family.
But looking at the news in the business world, years later, he had learned about Jin, Kazuya’s son and his somehow adoptive nephew. Seeing the pictures, he could not deny that Jin was a child Kazuya had apparently with Jun Kazama. The kid looked so much like his father there was no denying… Lee had then feared a bit for Jin since he feared Heihachi would remember Jin as the son of that monster Kazuya he hated so much and would treat his grandson badly like he did for his son. Lee somehow could understand Heihachi feared Kazuya for his supernatural aspect even if he didn’t approve of how the old man dealt with it and he did wonder if Heihachi would treat Jin the same way he mistreated Kazuya yet he didn’t want to have anything to do with that family anymore (because of the death threats Heihachi gave him and because of his own emotional and mental sanity, he had to stay away from them) so he hoped Jin would be fine and didn’t do more.
Beside, when Kazuya returned from the dead, Lee also began to slightly fear Jin. Kazuya was definitively supernatural and his son may also be. The young teenager may have the same supernatural powers his father had, so Lee would rather stay away from him as well. Something had also happened between Heihachi and Jin at that time and Jin had disappeared from the pictures with Heihachi. Heihachi was alone once more in the business conventions. Lee knew it had something to do with that supernatural aspect… Even if not wanting to be in a real war with his ex-adoptive father, Lee had began spying on the Mishima Zaibatsu and learned that Heihachi was still after that ancient magical artefact the Chang family had and he got rid of Jin at about that time, which made it suspicious. There definitively was a connection. Heihachi needed that amulet to get rid of his son and then his grandson.
But despite the spies he had in both the Mishima Zaibatsu and G-Corporation, he didn’t want to really involve himself too much until he met Lars, who was not like the other Mishimas, Lars was a good person and he quickly accepted Lee… Lee then realized that he still needed that Mishima approval and acceptance, having tried to fit since far much longer in that family than the time he had lived with his own family, even barely remembering what his real parents looked like, and Lars was giving that acceptance to him. It wasn’t exactly Heihachi, the father’s approval, what Lee would have wanted most and never got, but Lars had a lot of sides like his father, somehow he could replace him a bit and fill in for the Mishima approval. Lars never realized how much it meant to Lee but Lee knew and always considered Lars his brother and sworn ally.
Then Lars proposed to save Jin since they needed him to stop the war. Despite having feared him for a time, Lee had nothing personally against Jin, he was still curious about that nephew, so he accepted. And seeing how it turned out with Jin being raised then betrayed by his grandfather and how now being alone, Jin decided to set the world on fire while there was probably another way, Lee thought that he should have tried to contact Jin sooner and somehow help him despite the demon side and despite the fact he feared getting involved with this family again. Even when he knew what Kazuya was, he wanted to save him at first, so he should have tried with Jin as well. Lee felt he abandoned his nephew. He should really have met that young man before, even despite Heihachi’s threats. Anyway he came back in Japan later as Violet, so he should have done it sooner and helped Jin before his nephew got himself and got the whole world into this mess… He felt a bit guilty about it… And now he would know Jin only to lose him… Heihachi died, Kazuya will die, Jin may die, despite not getting along with most of them, all his family would die, except Lars, who may also die anyway since he was facing the danger in the front line. All his old friends were dying as well, Anna died, Paul may have already died, he was a little reluctant to let Jin go… But he knew he had too…
So the limousine stopped at the Zaibatsu. Lee then told Jin:
“Goodnight Jin. I’ll be back tomorrow morning at eight. And I’ll repair my robots for another game soon.”
He didn’t offer to accompany Jin to his quarters since he thought he would probably insult the young man. Jin didn’t seem worried and there were many Tekken Force everywhere. And Lars was there at the Zaibatsu if something happened that night… Alisa as well…
